Ordinary Lonely People

Segal's sculptures are usually ordinary people set in an urban environment; in this case, they sit on real benches.
Often they seem introspective. Although these two women are seated fairly close to each other, they don't appear to have a relationship. Segal may be suggesting that city dwellers have a sense of alienation or isolation from each other.
As I walked in the street, I looked and wondered if the people that walked past me were lonely - loneliness that crept into their heart.
